CCTA’s Outreach Program is designed to make theatrical experiences accessible to the neediest students in our community. Since its creation in 2004, the program has opened the world of theatre to over 15,000 students
with free or subsidized performances and after
school programs.
Each year, CCTA brings its inspiring production
of Ben Carson, M.D. to the children of Baltimore.
The play tells of Dr. Benjamin Carson’s inspiring
odyssey from an inner-city Detroit childhood to his
position as Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at
Johns Hopkins at age 33 – one of the youngest persons ever
to hold such a position and the only African American to have such a position at a world-renowned institution.
Since 2004, over 15,000 students from the Baltimore City Public School System have attended this free program which also includes bus transportation and a classroom set of Dr. Carson’s autobiography for each attending school. In 2009 the play travelled to St. Mary’s and Washington Counties with performances sponsored by the local school system, library and foundation/individual sponsors.
Seeing a need to provide more ongoing theatrical experiences for low and moderate income youth in the region, CCTA created The Afterschool Theatre Project which offers our same quality programs either free or at a greatly reduced price. In Howard County, CCTA provides these programs in collaboration with BRIDGES Over Howard County. Additional programs run throughout the year at three Baltimore City Public Schools.
